Viking Cruises set to embark on a new ocean-going venture in 2015

The world's largest River Cruise Line "Viking" will be taking a lateral move into ocean-going cruising in 2015. The very first ocean-going Viking ship called the "Viking Star" has a capacity for 930 passengers and is 47,800-tons in weight. It's planned to debut in April 2015 and the Chairman of the Californian-based company vowed not to cut any corners.

The Viking Star is in actual fact the first of 4 planned ocean-going ships, that Viking Cruises will bring to the market by 2017. Baltic and Mediterranean cruises will feature at first and thereafter itineraries are expected to sail further afield.

The management team has been progressively fortified over the past few years with the employment of Erling Frydenburg (owners representative), Matt Grimes (Consultant) and Torbjörn "Toby" Reivant Olausson (Hotel Operations Manager) to mention but a few.

Viking Cruises dominate the River cruising sector, operating more than 50 River Cruise vessels, which includes a massive 18 brand new ships that were christened earlier this year and yet another 12 River Ships on the order books for 2015. However, until now they have never operated any ocean-going cruises. Viking Ocean Cruises will therefore be the first major ocean line for a notably long time and plans to compete with other major luxury ocean-going Cruise Lines such as Crystal Cruises, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, SeaDream, Seabourn and Silversea are well under way.

The interesting fact about the first Viking vessel is the size; with 930 passengers it's considerably smaller than most mega ships which start at around 2,500 passengers. Yet it's over double the size of high-end luxury Cruise ships, like Silversea, Regent and Seabourn. On the other hand Azamara operates 2 ships with 710 passengers and Oceania operates 5 ships ranging from 684 - 1,250 passengers, hence its easy to visualize the space in which Viking Cruises are targeting to operate in.

Despite the global recession affecting in particular the western world, luxury cruising is performing remarkably well, hence with Viking's powerful infrastructure, the outlook is bright!
